Some may consider it a “cheap” way to play, or against the spirit of the game. Others call it optimal strategy. In reflecting on this path, I find it a double edged sword. On the one hand, if one must, then one must. But if it isn’t a dire necessity, then I believe one should consider the ramifications of the change in the atmosphere of the competitive landscape. When one party resorts to this, especially when it isn’t particularly necessary, the other party or parties will most likely change their posture dramatically. Where the friendly and respectful was, the win at all costs emerges. Any sense of “fair play” is transformed into something ugly and mercenary. Just be careful when making this decision, especially if the game involves a long term partner (business, romance, etc). Turning things from cordial to ruthless can poison the well. Think about the long term implications.
